HOAT Antifreeze
« on: January 30, 2013, 12:10:40 PM »

I need to change the thermostat on the KJ, but I'm struggling to find the correct antifreeze anywhere.
Does anyone know a supplier for the HOAT type, or do people just use the OAT one instead?

Cheers  :icon_biggrin:

Blimey it's not cheap is it.  I was going to give it a flush and replace it all.  I might drop one of the sellers a line and see if they do a bigger bottle

The simple answer is HOAT is backwards compatible with old ethylene glycol where OAT isn't! It's all to do with the silicate mixing capabilities! I went on a very very boring course regarding coolants! if you put OAT in an old cast engine designed with ethylene glycol in mind it does rot rubber seals & joints (I do have personal experience of this) & if you put old type coolants in an all alloy engine even with distilled water they do fur up & don't stop alloy corrosion!
Hope this helps!

I use the Mobil HOAT version in my KJ 2.5 CRD with no problems..down to minus 25. But it's a shit load cheaper than you poor buggers are being slugged. A 5L bottle for me cost about 4 quid.

Comma G-05 is HOAT. Available in loads of places nowadays. I switched to it at my last flush/change when I did my water pump. It's the same price as the other Comma antifreeze types at my local car shop.

They have a stockist finder on their website. Look near the bottom for the postcode box...

I've used Comma products for years and never had a problem.

If you put your reg number in on their website it tells you what fluids to put in your motor - oils and antifreeze and your nearest stockist.

They also have a guarantee where they will come round to you and take a sample if you think their products have caused damage, I know that they probably have dozens of get out clauses in it, but I'd have thought they'd have been caught out long ago if they were producing crap.

I got a couple of bottles today.  With the distilled water I ended up spending over £40 on it  :010:
