YJ burning oil.
« on: September 24, 2016, 06:02:56 PM »

Seems like the YJ is burning oil. Since i changed the oil and filter a few weeks ago, its gone through to disappear offthe end of the dipstick. Definitely a oil burning smell when driven too. Plugs 6 and 4 are the two 'sooty' plugs, the others are regular beige.

Suggestions of what to check? I'm thinking oil rings or valve seats? Compression test for leakage?

Compression test is a pretty good place to start.

Can't quite see why an oil and filter change should suddenly produce these symptons tho'.

blow by on the piston rings sounds likely, compression test as suggested will give confirmation or at least an indication

Ewwww i wouldnt put ordinary diesel engine oil in it, it may raise pressure a bit but overwash the bores due to excessive detergent, try n get a leakdown test done, this way you can here where the oil is potentially going, excess oil down n out the pipe may kill the cat too,

just my thoughts

YJ engines have been known for using oil past the rings... is it blowing smoke through out of the exhaust?

Oil dirty oil can often 'hide' symptoms and once new fresh oil is in they can show themselves, you could try a 'stop smoke' additive.

Defo compression check is the starting point and of course look for any signs of leaking; rear main is another favourite place and of course since the filter has been changed possible leak from it's seal?

Back in the 'Dark Ages' there was a product called STP ....came in a can and poured like frozen molasses......
Used it on a car once to reduce oil consumption... Don't know if it still exists maybe an option after all above ideas have been tried.

Yeah Wynns do a product, for sure there are a few out there, I bet STP do one....

Top tip pop it into a pot of warm water and it pours in easier....

What oil did you put in it. Have you checked for leaks?

10/40 semi synthetic. And yes. I've gunked the pretty much clean anyway engine block and not seen any seepage.
