Squeaky noise coming from wheels
« on: November 29, 2016, 08:26:37 PM »

Guys,

I am starting to get out of ideas so I thought maybe one of you has encountered this annoying noise.
Basically when driving at slow speed ( 10 - 20 mph) there is a skeaky noise coming from the wheels on driver side. I replaced the front wheel hubs and rear wheel bearings on driver and passenger side but the noise is still there. There is no stone or any crap stuck in the tyres.
Any ideas ?

Both Propshafts are new. I lost the rear one in February on the Motorway so I had a new one made to measure by a company that Jim Sunderland uses.

I then realised that the Propshaft that I lost was still under Omix Ada warranty so I contacted them and they agreed to replace it so I asked for a Front Prop instead as I just replaced the rear. I received the new Front Prop in April.

I also have a humming noise that comes from the rear Diff at 40mph and above. Both Diffs were re-geared in 5.13 Ratio 18 months ago so new Yukon Overhaul kits were fitted.

I believe that noise comes from the outer bearing where the Yoke connects as it's the only bearing that is still stock.

I replaced the wheel hubs and rear axle wheel bearings so there is nothing between the discs and the plates but thanks for the suggestion.

What I noticed though is that the pinion seal of the Rear Diff is leaking and there is humming noise coming from the rear diff from 40mph and above so I wonder if the squeaky noise at very low speed comes also from the rear diff and turns itself into a loud humming noise at higher speed.

I already bought the complete rebuilt kit for Dana 44 so I am debating if it's possible to check that the pinion outer bearing is damaged by just removing the Prop Shaft and the seal or should I give the lot to do to a pro ?

I know the latest is the safest option but it's also the dearest one.  :017:

If it's a wheel speed dependent high-pitched 'squeak-squeak-squeak' that's loudest when turning full lock at low speed, it could be a bad front wheel driveshaft u-joint on its' way out. From what you said, it didn't sound like that was one of the parts you had replaced yet. I've also heard that bad lower control arm bushes can squeak like this.

Thanks for that, and yes it becomes more high pitched with the speed. My Driveshafts U-Joints are stock so it would be a good idea to replace them anyway.

Do you know if I can find Driveshaft U-joints in the UK or do I have to order these from US?

Lots of people will sell you appropriate u-joints. The regular Jeep specialists (Jeepymart, 4play, etc) or any number of UK ebay sellers. I'd go for some high quality greasable uj's like MOOG.
