Leaky Bits
« on: November 21, 2014, 05:25:43 PM »

I've got a weep as per the pic, no idea what this bit is called but it's throwing the fluid over the exhaust and so smells a tad of burnt transmission fluid or similar when the exhaust is hot.
Should I panic about the leak or just get it fixed when convenient ?

I really don't know too much about diesels, but I had an XJ 4ltr with the same symptoms . Dripped tranny fluid on the exhaust when the engine was hot. Quite spectacular on the M1. Left an impenetrable smoke cloud  across two counties before the hard shoulder became my friend. Torque converter oil seal was the culprit. HTH

This one's not smoking yet, just the smell from the exhaust.
Hopefully it'll last for a bit longer because I'm off to France for some alcohol tomorrow  :icon_biggrin:

Well it survived the trip to France  :icon_biggrin:
It's going in for the MOT (and the redundant handbrake sorting out) so I'll probably get it sorted then.

Out of curiousity, is it a big job ?

To be honest TC I bottled it and put it into an auto gearbox specialist. Seem to recall he had it for a couple of days. If you google the problem there's a load of info especially on the US forums, although if you made it to France and back, presumably at motorway speeds without clouding up half of Europe it may not be your problem. Best of luck. Once it's on the ramps it should be more apparent where the leak is.

If he has got the 2.5TD (manual) and you the 4.0 petrol (automatic), then I doubt he will have a torque converter.

 :iagree: :iagree:

Give it a good clean up, check tension on everything and tighten as required.
