FFS Trac-loc not working
« on: April 19, 2014, 05:54:06 PM »

Hi Guys, in need of your expertise here, I was told rear diff was LSD when I bought it but thought it was a 35, yesterday found out it was a 44, yeah wheels wont fall off if I snap shaft, but had a bit play round the back of industrial est where Jeep is and playing on some mounds , well noticed only one rear wheel spinning so went back to unit and jacked one rear wheel up and tried to pull away, nothing it just spins wheel, I then turned wheel by hand that was in the air, it was not easy but I should not be able to do that, when both rears are in air if I spin one wheel the other follows. Now this is the question, what should I do, what options do I have, I really want either a LSD or locker of some sorts but as its not a hardened play truck wont pay silly money, but as I also found out the Articulation is very poor compared to what I am used to need something to keep it going forward when Greenlaning or playing. but most of the time will spend its time on tarmac as a daily. I would appreciate your input on this one as I said, this is my first Jeep so don't know what's the best route to go here.
Regards George

I think they are shite   get a lock right or similar easy done for the same price as new lsd plates

its worth first trying fresh oil with additive and doing a few figure 8s  I think its fecked myself but a correct oil change is almost free compared to new parts

its just had fresh oil and additive yesterday, and thought that was to stop lurching ect whilst turning to help the plates slip, my problem is the plates slip all the time, I agree that I would prefer a powertrax unit in either the right lock which I have had before and cant understand why they arent more popular over here or the No-slip from powertrax, but I cant find a uk based supplier for powertrax and would I also have to source a standard open diff to use these units?

for suppliers try

carlos and lama  both super helpful I would in fact spend my own money with them they are that good

and as to why are lunch box lockers not more popular in the uk  :017: I think its cos the 4x4 owning public has been told for so long that if it does not cost you at least a kidney per axle it cant possibly work and by default is junk

Cheers will get intouch with them, I have read some crap about powertrax, I bought one complete in a axle for a landrover about 5 years ago, when I stripped and sold my toy I gave it to a good mate, I cant rate them high enough and neither can he to the point he got in touch with Richmond to see about stocking them for Landrover but was told they dont do them, funny thing is though what the hell did i buy then and fitted into two discos.

Always had lunchbox lockers on the YJ dana30 and 44 They are still there with the current owner and never went wrong.
Got a lunchbox on the dana60 front and only put a Detroit in the 14 bolt cos that's all that's reliable and available....

So they get my vote :icon_super:

Am i right in thinking if i decide not to repair this diff, I will need a normal open diff to fit a locker of any description in?

Yes
and the carrier break conundrum as well
I think its 4.10 and deeper
And 3.73 and less

So you might need new carrier for front as well if you decide you are going 35s soon which will. Require 4.56 or 4.88

Going to stick too 33s, 90% of time will be on tarmac as daily so aint going daft. its just the articulation is poor compared to what Im used too so need all the drive I can get, would hate for the Tj to embarrass itself in front of my mates with their green oval brigade. Im getting enough ribbing now so need to put them in there place not add fuel to fire.

You might find there are lockers that will fit in the LSD carrier.

I think another reason that the "lunchbox" lockers are not more popular in the UK is all the horror stories circulated about their effects on on road handling.
Easy to get into big trouble if you don't think about what you're doing.
The Americans don't seem bothered by such things.
I embarrassed myself by having to ask on the IFSJA forums what a "Lincoln Locker" was.
Some guy just posted up a picture of a big Lincoln arc welder. :icon_redface:

Is there a way of calculating import tax from the states?

Does it automatically now on a lot of eBay items.

So find something very similar on EBay with the same shipping costs and you will have a rough guide.

I'm just wondering if the import duty is calculated on the price of the goods or on the total price you pay including shipping?

I can't comment on how it works over there, but on this side of the EU it works like this....cost of goods + shipping + handling + storage + admin costs + cost of delivery to you, from port of arrival to your address....then they add 20% to all of the above.

If you go through the checkout process on Quadratec it calculates shipping. Just add 20-25% on for extra duties / taxes etc to get it here.

I found one on ebay, works out about £416 delivered, quadratec have to get a quote for shipping then come back to you to confirm charges.
now to find that additional expense, hopefully by the back end of this week she will have MOT

Well found the addition funds, I decided to sell our lasses car today so I washed it took some pics and stuck it on gumtree, within 3 minutes responses galore, within the hour its gone  :hysterical:, so I have messaged the states to double check its the right one. Its not all bad for our lass she getting my current car which is better.
the unit I am looking at is the powertrax LSD 0444-3020
