Speakers - XJ
« on: April 19, 2014, 02:57:11 PM »

Trying to upgrade the speakers in the truck and need some expert assistance please!

Can anyone advise which one of these cables is positive or which is negative please?

Incase the picture is not clear, both wires are blue, one with a white stripe, and the other with a red stripe

Also, how do you get the door skins off of the front doors? I undid all the crews I could fine (5), but it still seemed stuck on; is there a special technique, or have I missed screws? (or am I not pulling hard enough?) - all I want to do is see if speakers are fitted, and then fit the aftermarket ones I have.

Thanks in advance!

To get the door skins off there are lots of panel clips which just pull out. They often need prising out, and to do that I wrap a normal knife in sellotape so that I don't scratch the paint! Start prising from the bottom, working your way up the sides, then the skin lifts out of the window channel.

I have a wiring diagram for the sound system if you need it, but I'm not home until Monday to upload it!

sorry but you can damage some speakers by connecting them backwards
also the base tones are lost if there not all connected the same

Wiring the speakers back to front can also create problems with constructive and destructive sound wave interference.
For example the right speaker may be forced to work in a diametrically opposite manner to the left, effectively cancelling out sound waves within the car, making even the best kit sound awful.

Yes, simply put, the speaker will work and the magnet and cone will oscillate at the same frequency but if the speaker polarity on either side of the car is swapped then the speakers will be out of phase and wont sound as good as they could do.

So in theory then, as long as I am consistent in which colour I use as +ive and -ive then there shouldn't be an issue?

There won't be an issue but there will be a sound difference in quality I believe

correct statement from above on all accounts but you are not in an acoustically designed room. there are seats with padding and abrupt dash panells etc. unless your an audiphile who claim to tell the difference between speakers and gold plated connections it aint goint to make much difference.

as long as you wire the same coloured connections to the positive and negative it shouldn't matter

Here's the wiring diagram - it's for a '98 but I can't imagine it changed much '97-'01. I'm assuming yours has the Infinity system - am I correct?

Thanks for the PDF - I don't have an Infinity system, just what looks like two speakers in the rear roof space.

Yes she said she had been roughly mishandled by a greasy looking knifless bear grylls wannabe with a quiff!  But his 50mm stabber couldn't remove the skin off a rice pudding never mind make her knees knock!  That was you was it?

please!! One must confirm, the rice pudding was span"KY" when your lass was ready (not that you would know) I delved-in and knees did indeed nock as did the arch of her back, never has she been to such a place apparently !!

Knife not required as the pin-prick Span"KY" did the glorious deed.
