249 to 242 conversion question

I have a 98 zj that I'm gonna be doing the 242 conversion on. I have a great right up on the actual conversion but, I want to get rid of the CV front prop for a uj type. How do I go about changing the cv fitting on the axle for a yoke for the uj prop without upsetting the crown and pinion setup.

I've un done them with a tourque wrench set at the reqiured value, then reversed it for re-assembly :icon_biggrin:

I think you will find the front axle will have a crush sleeve that will require replacement. These are one time use and you bin them when disturbed.

if you can get a high pinion axle off  an xj.
just make sure the ratios match

that gives you a high pinion and lower prop angles

it will indeed have a crush that is once only  but in the field if you are careful and have some idea what you are about you can change the seal and or the drive flange and re sett it  and not replace the crush

Thanks everyone, i think i will have a go at changing it over using the 'careful' method. If it goes tits up i do have another axle i can use.

if you have a torque wrench then you can verify the torque of the bolts before you remove them where possible. then retighten during asembly

The nut is not torqued when new. It is tightened compressing the crush sleeve to set the pinion preload. The more you turn the tighter the preload. The preload is checked with a small torque wrench.

Other then that the nut is very tight and normally I ended up with a bar and a pipe on the end.

I've changed the seal before by marking the nut and counting turns to remove and then re-counting it back on. Mine is a non crush sleeve type diff though so not sure if that makes a difference.

the crush sleeve spacer effects preload on pinion bearings so should be renewed this is also true of the pinion nut too ( but does that  :ecomcity:)
