Hopefully it turns out to be something relatively simple to cure.

Gotta start with the easy stuff and eliminate possible causes, one by one...tranny fluid leaking onto a hot exaust (smoke after 10 minutes is a good hint)...I've had it happen when over greasing a uni joint and the excess ended up on the hot bits.

Other than the smoke problem, how does it drive? Transmission wise?

Initial inspection low on oil to gearbox.
Will add oil and see what happens then. Just wondering firstly where the oil has gone plus what damage this has done running on no/little oil.
Bloody windy here so will let it calm down so I don't have to replace the bonnet

Stu, it could have been just a slow loss due to a leaky seal / gasket that has been happening for ages & just got to a point were it has started to effect performance but nobody thought to check the level properly when its warm.

Does it look wet underneath or at least can you trace the source ? Check the tranny cooling pipes to & from the radiator as well as that was where we had a leak on the TJ a few years back.

I would clean it all underneath after you have topped it up & just keep checking the level for signs of leaks underneath.

Good luck :)

Well gents
Started it and changed gears ok then went into what seems a limp mode. Oil in gearbox slightly over the full mark. There is a damp mark over the gearbox pan. Previous owner says it smoked after 10 mins but cant seem to make it do that. Gone through all the gears no nasty noises.
When the lad drove it up on the truck engine management light came on. Lovely looking truck as well

Stu...any codes or other warning lights? Just been having a sqizz at the WJ section on the AJOR forum and they have a huge amount of info on there. Regarding the light coming on when he was loading it...could be low oil level, combined with the angle of the ramps perhaps?

One thing I did glean from the other forum altho' it sounds strange to me...if you have a tired battery or suspect earth connections, it can cause a few problems with the sensors on the tranny...often throws you into limp mode.

the going in to "limp mode" might be the pressure solenoid & transducer playing up, my old 3.1TD with the 44re box went wrong at about the same mileage. when cold it worked fine until it got hot then it would go up the gears fine but not back down. easy to change lots of youtube videos on it.
