XJ TD Serpentine belt
« on: October 01, 2017, 06:13:14 PM »

Hello, the belt went in mine today, and I have never replace one before. Has anyone got instructions on how to fit a new one? Are there any special tools I need? Is it worth doing/replacing anything else whilst doing the job? And anywhere that sells the belt for less than £50?

Right, I got the belt, but I can't figure out how to fit it. I can't slacken the alternator, as it doesn't seem to want to move, and I can't leverage the belt over the pulley. I can't undo any of the tensioner pulleys either. Has anyone done this who can advise please?

In the belt tensioner there is an 1/2" square - put a breakerbar in there and push the tensioner back - this will give you the slack to fit the new belt.

The tensioner should move back on it's own - but most of the time they are a bt knackered - so just tighten it by pulling the tensioner back to the desired tension - or pay a fortune and buy a new tensioner....

This may work for you...at another time, with a similar setup, it worked for me. Give everything on and around the tensioner (except the face in contact with the belt) a generous dose of penetrating oil ...WD40 could do, in a pinch. They are prone to locking themselves into one position, unless lubricated from time to time. My method used to be...douse the parts which should move, with the light oil, wait an hour, give it a couple of good taps with a rubber mallet and repeat the oil application.

Give it a try.

Cheers guys. Which pulley is the tensioner you refer to with the 1/2 drive square?

it is the pulley on the right hand side of the engine that has a square hole in the arm that the pulley is screwed to.

That's the female part of the tensioner which decided to come off whilst adjusting the tensioner for fitment of the belt  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
