Neutral safety & backup switch CJ7
« on: February 03, 2018, 08:42:17 AM »

Help required if possible. I'm swapping the 999 auto box out of my CJ7 for a TH700r4. The 999 box had an internal neutral and backup switch and the 700 will need a separate external switch for those functions. The jeep has a Saginaw steering column luckily with the slot already punched in to accept a switch for the TH boxes fitted to earlier Cj’s. So it seemed easy enough to think if source the appropriate switch, mount to the column and all will be good and fairly OEM like. Various sources state that the Standard Motor Products NS-15 neutral safety and backup switch is the correct one. I've sourced this switch, mechanically it fits but electrically there seems to be no switching for the reverse position even though it has several terminals. One set does give connectivity in reverse but then again also when in drive.  Is anyone else using this type of switch on their jeeps or something that looks the same but with a different part number? Or maybe there is something special about how it should be wired that I'm missing.

Rockauto shows a seperate back up lamp switch which must be in the transmission somewhere, and must be activated by a shaft or something when the transmission is put into reverse. I don't know enough about the 700r4 to say add anything other that if it doesn't have that extra switch on it somewhere you might need to get creative.

Thanks Jonny jeep. I’m pretty certain the TH400 fitted to the earlier jeeps had an external switch also for Back up. The following pic is what I require and that was what the NS15 should have been. It definitely shows a backup lamp connection. so if anyone knows of this I will be pleased to know.

Done a bit of googling and the diagram you've posted looks more like an NS-41 NSS.
