drainage holes
« on: December 14, 2014, 10:59:46 PM »

I'm a little concerned about the water and crud that gets caught up inside the chassis rails on my TJ , especially in the long horizontel section between the front and rear axles ... can I drill some suitably sized drainage holes in the underside to clear the muck out or will this compromise the overall strength to severely ?

Advise appreciated ...

Get a jet wash drain cleaning kit
 Run it down the rails

I think Gaz has one of those...you might want to check with him about how effective it is.

Don't  drill any more holes, there are already holes there along the çhassis, as said jet wash then use wax oil or something similar to stop internal corrosion getting worse.

Many on the US forums drill a hole by placing the drill bit up between the lower control arm and the mount. I think it might be a 3/8" (9.5mm) bit they normally use.

What I've done is use a few cans of Eastwood Internal Frame Coating to coat the inside of my chassis. It comes with a two foot long applicator tube which means the entire inside of the chassis can be done.

You could also take the trans mount tray bolts out either side...... Leave the middle ones in to hold it up and then jet wash and spray with whatever you choose..... Those 6 threaded bungs do tend to gather rust and break loose eventually.

Not sure when they stopped doing it but for 97 models they are tack welded in place as well as crushed. If they do break loose new ones (same as early imperial OEM ones) can be obtained if necessary from the blackmagicbrakes.com website. Later models which use 12mm bolts would need the kit including bolts.

Nial, No need to drill extra holes, I have something like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KARCHER-DRAIN-CLEANING-HOSE-225BAR-150C-BAYONET-FITTING-NOZZLE-3REAR-1FORWARD-/261107543915?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&var=&hash=item3ccb38ef6b

If you want, you are more than welcome to pop over to mine in Worcester & I can show you what I use & we can even try it on your TJ mate, it works really well.
Once cleaned, I spray the inside of the chassis with de-watering oil to help stave off further corrosion.

Give me a shout if you want to pop over mate before you spend your hard earned  :icon_super:
