A/C clutch engages and disengages at idle
« on: June 20, 2017, 08:42:41 PM »

Hi, anyone got any advice on air con?  Just had a re gas and the ac clutch engages and then pops out again every 7 to 8 seconds. The coolant pipes are very cold but getting limited cold air at the vents.  System has been vacuum checked and no leaks.

Any ideas?

Hi Graham,

My guess is that the air gap for the clutch is too large due to wear. You should be able to take the belt and pulley off (can't remember the exact details, youtube is your friend here) but you can remove the clutch and then there should be 1 or more shims. Remove 1 shim and reassemble. The air gap is now reduced and the clutch should engage properly again.
An even better option is to see if you can buy a new clutch plate as this will last longer. But it will be a struggle trying to find one, if available.
Next option would be to replace the A/C compressor, as this will, have a new clutch plate.
