XJ 1995 2.5 TD Limited

Hi,

New here, first "techie" post . . .

A question on behalf of my Dad who has been running my old XJ for the last couple of years, we've never had any major issues with the XJ, replaced the pushrods, put harder springs on the rear and all was going well, until an annoying problem has developed: -

The XJ runs fine for a period of time, either on the drive or out on the road, then all gauges and dash lights drop out, the voltmeter drops to 12v and the engine begins to knock.  Diesel is getting through but with no engine management to control it.  Immediately turn engine off.  We then have to sit turning ignition on/off repeatedly until everything comes back and the engine can be turned back over.

Dad has gone through everything he can think of (he is a retired AA Patrol and mechanic) and is pulling what little hair he has left out!

If anybody has any ideas/advice it would be very welcome!!

Sounds like there could be a problem with the Jtec controller (ECU) under the bonnet. Try disconnecting it and checking the connectors for corrosion.

Thanks for the reply - we had to be relayed home last night, XJ had been fine all day then we were driving along and all instruments failed, diesel knock started, pulled over and that was it, nothing would come back!

At least now it's no longer an intermittent problem, he can try and diagnose things!

Does anybody have a complete list of the ECU fault codes and/or a diagram of the ECU for the 1995 XJ 2.5TD, we've managed to get a few errors codes from the check engine light, but are not sure if the info we have is correct for the diesel engine.

Thanks!

31 was definite, we think possibly a 22 or 23, but things started playing up at that point!

He's now removed the ECU and took it to the guy at www.ecu-testing.com for him to take a look at it.

Thanks again.
